The jazz virgin deflowered ( Haha…I should thank pink cherry for coining this…)
The only thing is, I dont really think it’s my thing. And still I have people telling me, it will dawn on me - this thing call Jazz. I shall be enlightened. Oh well, not one to say no to a night out or a challenge - ok, ok, I really just wanted to see Matthew’s alma mater… but anyhow, I went to see Babu ( www.babu.co.za) live last night. They did a charitable performance at the Constantia Waldorf School hall yesterday evening. I even had a front row seat ( yes..believe it…)
I promise!!! I managed to not Fall asleep ( so I ( blush) yawned many a time…that doesnt count).
Admitedly, I can say that I did enjoy their exceptionally high rolling, adrenalin infused performance… but sadly I still could not catch up and understand IT! And before suggesting Stan Getz and Diana Krall - let me just say that this isn’t anything like Girl from Ipanema or Look of Love Ok …this..this is the crazy kind of intellectual Jazz so to speak. The kind where the lead guitarist just goes off tangent and starts playing in an ecstatic frenzy - in my head, and if you’ve read Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles - he looks like the freakingly mad but genius Magnus - Lestat’s maker. I do believe, one of the reason I was awake as I was was because watching them play was very fascinating - looking at the reactions on their faces, watching their fingers move up and down the fret boards and strings, or on the tabla - the energy coming out of each of these musicians were nothing short fo amazing, really.
Jazz virgin or not aside, of all the jazz masterpieces they played last night, I enjoyed Tilana best. Its is such a beautiful rythm. Very sensual, you can almost feel the dancer moving through her extensive, delicate footwork.
I also enjoyed the introductory solo performance by the bass guitarist - Shane on the Eclipse piece. Haunting intro. ( I’m such a sucker for love drama music…)
Babu is made up of Reza: Lead Guitar, Shane: Bass, Kesavan ( Drums), Ronan ( percussion).
Unlike my two other sisters who blog regularly, I am very malas…especially when it comes to updating. Anyway, It so happens I have 30 minutes to spare today..so let’s see what comes out of this then!
Since meeting M, I’ve gotten a raise, have become a regular train metrorail commuter ( wah lau..am I brave or what?), and now moving to RUSTIC Kalk Bay, a world so different to where I am currently staying and playing. ( Oy vey..) I guess that’s what happens when you meet new people - you try new things.
One of those things I am getting more and more exposed to is “WORLD/african folk” music and more recently ..( ohmygd..i can’t believe it myself)..JAZZ. I’m ..uh..still trying..JAZZ isn’t easy, especially if it involves illiterate ears like YT. I still try hard to keep my yawns to a minimum. Dont get me wrong, I dont think Jazz is boring at all.. it’s just too complex for me to appreciate and be bothered with ..right now. M keep son telling me its the mode…( hmm?what mode? is what I keep on saying.)
M is still very considerate, he tries his best I think not to play JAZZ when we’re in a space together. But who knows what will happen when we do move in to this new place…
Maybe it’s time I start taking the Linkin Park, Creed CDs out….hehehe….
When you’ve past a certain age, sometimes new things just don’t stick to you as easily as it would if you were younger… Remember Incubus? Listening to their old hit ” I miss You” again - Damn that was a frikkin good song. ….Still is.
